The crash occurred while he was traveling to represent the government at the funeral of former government minister Ralph Kasambara. President Lazarus Chakwera confirmed Chilima's death, expressing deep sorrow and acknowledging the significant contributions Dr Chilima made to the nation. Dr Chilima had served as vice president since 2014, holding roles in economic planning and public sector reforms during his tenure
Former President Peter Mutharika and other leaders have called for prayers and support for the families of the victims. Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing as recovery efforts continue in the dense forest area where the wreckage was found.
